Wondering when to take maternity photos? I’m here to share with you everything you need to know for the perfect timing

If you’re expecting, first of all, congratulations on welcoming your newest addition to your family! Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, this season of life deserves to be celebrated and beautifully documented. One of the most asked questions from expecting parents is ‘When should I take maternity photos?’. This is a great question! I’ve got you covered with all the details you need to plan a relaxed, gorgeous, and totally stress-free maternity session.

Let’s dive into the ideal timing for your session, what month you should take maternity photos, special considerations for twins and high-risk pregnancies, and when you should book your photographer (hint: sooner is better!).

The big question is when you should get maternity photos done

The sweet spot for most moms-to-be is between 28 and 34 weeks. The start of the third trimester is the beginning of when I suggest having your photos done. Waiting too long though may result in you feeling not totally into your session. The last thing we want is you to feel miserable and tired! Around 28-34 weeks your belly is perfectly round, but you’re still fairly comfortable moving around and posing without too much effort. Most expecting mothers schedule their session between the seventh and eighth month in pregnancy. Make sure you know your photographer’s gallery delivery times, because you’ll also want to be sure you have time to enjoy your maternity photos prior having your baby!

Expecting multiples? Here’s what you need to know!

If you’re carrying twins or more, we’ll want to schedule your photos a bit earlier than most. My recommendation for multiples is around 24–28 weeks, since you’ll likely be showing a little earlier and may be more physically limited later on. A pregnancy with multiples typically don’t go all the way to 40 weeks. By doing your photos between 24-28 weeks it allows us to capture your bump while you’re still feeling your best, and before possible bed rest or early delivery. The goal is to document your strength and beauty before pregnancy get’s harder.

High-risk pregnancy? Talk to your photographer early!

If you’ve been advised that your pregnancy is high-risk, timing becomes even more important. First and foremost—always listen to your doctor. If you’re unsure about when to take maternity photos in this situation, I recommend reaching out early in your pregnancy so we can make a flexible plan. Whether that means scheduling sooner or adjusting location or pace to accommodate your needs, I’m here to make this experience joyful and safe for you.

When Should You Book Your Maternity Photographer?

As early as possible, but better late than never! If you’re due in spring through fall (aka the busy seasons), it is especially important to book early! You’ll want to start searching for your maternity photographer sometime in the second trimester. Booking early means you get the ideal time slot for when to take pregnancy photos, plus plenty of time to prepare for your session without feeling rushed. It also gives us space to talk styling (yes, you’ll be getting a full guide from me!) and location ideas for your session.

Some maternity photographers offer a maternity + newborn bundle, so booking both sessions at once can be a stress-saver and save you money in the process! Ask your photographer if they offer this!

What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos

You now are fully prepared for when to take maternity photos and when to book. Now it’s time to make you feel amazing during your session! The second most common question I hear is ‘What to wear for my Maternity session’. I’m working on a full blog post with all the styling tips and outfit inspiration you could ask for. I want you to know everything you need to for dressing that gorgeous bump! Check out my client closet to see what dress options might work for you!
