Outdoor newborn family photos are one of the most memorable ways to introduce your newest family member to the world. Over the past few years, lifestyle newborn sessions have become a popular choice for families, and it’s easy to see why. There’s something truly magical about capturing the entire family in these moments and in a stress-free environment. The way siblings gently interact with their new baby brother or sister, the natural smiles, and the pure love shared between family members are memories you’ll treasure forever. In this post, I’ll share why I believe outdoor newborn family sessions are simply the best—and how to prepare your family for a picture-perfect session in nature.
Your first thought is, the cold temperatures in the winter months will not work for your family. As a first note, you should absolutely not go out in blizzard weather, pouring rain or extremely low temps. Find a photographer that will be accommodating and flexible to weather for you and your family. The last thing you need is to get the entire family sick and miserable with a new baby here.
Most photographers who photograph outdoor family newborn sessions know how unpredictable weather can be, especially when you live in Colorado! I personally want you and your family in the best mood possible. Weather is a huge reason to move your outdoor newborn family photos to a different date. Nobody feels their best at an uncomfortable session with miserable weather. Children are crying and want to go home, parents are stressed to the max, and frankly the photographer is usually feeling bad for attempting the session in bad weather in the first place.
Soft natural light is the perfect lighting to get the flattering photos you’re wanting of your newborn. Not to mention that you and your family with appreciate a breath of fresh air. Your newborn session is the perfect time to get out of the house and let your kids run around and explore the outdoors. It will be beneficial for the whole family!
Outdoor settings are a great way to capture genuine emotions and moments that reflect your family’s personality. Outdoor newborn photos are less posed and more about the natural interactions parents and siblings have between one another. Outdoor sessions can feel more relaxed and comfortable for families, reducing stress for newborns, siblings and parents. Not to mention that your outdoor newborn session will take less than an hour versus traditional newborn photography where it could take hours to complete the session.
One of the most beautiful aspects of outdoor newborn family sessions is the way they allow for natural, unposed interactions. The open space, fresh air, and serene environment help everyone feel more relaxed and at ease, which in turn leads to authentic, candid moments that truly capture the essence of your family. That’s the ultimate goal, isn’t it? To get authentic photos that truly showcase your family at this special milestone. Family newborn outdoor photos are the best way to achieve this.
In an outdoor setting, families often feel less pressure than in a traditional indoor studio session. There’s no need to worry about perfect lighting or a controlled environment. Instead, parents can focus on simply being present with each other and their new baby. Or even letting their toddler explore while mom is trying to prep baby. This relaxed vibe allows for more spontaneous moments—whether it’s a gentle kiss on the forehead, a shared laugh, or an intimate look between the parents. The outdoors naturally encourages families to interact more freely, leading to photos that showcase real emotions.
Outdoor sessions provide an ideal space for siblings to engage with their new baby brother or sister in a way that feels completely natural. Kids, especially young ones, often feel more at ease in nature—they can run, play, and explore without feeling confined by four walls. Whether it’s holding hands with their baby sibling, giving them a soft kiss, or simply gazing at them with wide eyes of wonder, outdoor settings give siblings the freedom to express their love and excitement in ways that studio settings might stifle. The more relaxed the environment, the more likely it is that these adorable, unscripted moments will be captured.
Unlike indoor shoots, where the space can sometimes limit the movement of family members, outdoor settings offer endless opportunities for interaction. Parents can walk hand-in-hand with their newborn in one arm, while the other parent can twirl their older children. You can even have a family cuddle session on a blanket. These actions, while simple, often result in stunning, candid shots that capture the joy and warmth of family life. The natural elements—trees, open fields, or beaches—become part of the story, creating a dynamic and engaging backdrop that complements the candid moments.
When you’re outside, your family’s personality really shines through. Without the constraints of posing for a camera, parents and kids can laugh, chat, and be themselves. The soft rustling of leaves, the sound of birds chirping, and the open sky above create a sense of freedom and openness. This often results in more genuine expressions and less self-consciousness, which translates into photos that feel real and alive. Whether it’s a shared joke between parents or a sibling towards the camera with pure joy on their faces, the outdoor environment encourages playfulness and spontaneity during outdoor family photoshoots.
Most newborn photos taken in studio or in the home are limited on space. I love the depth of layers and colors an outdoor space can add to your families newborn session. If you’re family is looking to book outdoor newborn family photos in Colorado Springs area, I have some amazing recommendations for locations that would be perfect for your shoot.
Colorado Springs Newborn-Family Photo locations for each season
If your baby happens to have an arrival in the Summer months you’ll be able to capture some of Colorado’s wildflowers within your session. This is my personal favorite time of year here in Colorado. If you love the fall foliage and are having a baby around late September to mid-October, then you have to see locations up in Woodland Park for the beautiful Aspen trees in your photos. Here are a few of my favorite locations for each season that would work perfectly for your outdoor family newborn photos:
It’s important to dress for the occasion. While you want to wear a beautiful dress that flows, there are ways to achieve this look with a long sleeve option. I personally buy most my client closet dresses from We Are Reclamation. This talented designer has some beautiful long sleeve maternity dress options. You’ll want to dress the family with cute fashionable layers. Think of bringing a cozy knitted blanket for cold weather. Think about wearing a coat between shots if you’re not able to get a coat that goes with your photos. Be sure your newborn is comfortable by incorporating a newborn hat or beanie that goes well with your color scheme.
The blanket shown in these photos is one of my favorite Spring time blankets for photos! I do not receive commission on this link, I just love it so much!
Outdoor newborn family sessions in winter are a little tricky. It’s important that your newborn and other children feel comfortable at your photoshoot. Opt for a location with little to no wind. Some locations are prone to wind like mountain tops, beaches and large open spaces. Find a spot that is protected by rocks, trees (but not direct cover unless you want dark photos), and wind blocking hills or mountains. Having the car nearby to escape the heat to warm up is also super important when it comes to newborn photos. Prepare for a small break if needed to keep everyone comfortable and happy.
The best time to do your newborn-family session is 60-90 minutes prior to sunset or at sunrise. Depending on the time of year, you may opt to do an early morning time rather than your session taking place on a late summer evening. In the winter, sunset is desirable with small kiddos because of early bedtimes. If you’re looking for a beautiful golden hue to your family’s photos, then you may consider a sunset session. If you like the crisp morning light then morning will be best for your family. Check with your photographer to see what time is best for your desired location.
For a smooth session, expect the unexpected. Bring extra outfit choices. Look for photo friendly blankets or see if your photographer may have options for this. For little ones, think about bringing snacks that aren’t messy. While marshmallows aren’t on our typical snack list, they make for the perfect photo session snack. They’re white making for no staining on their clothing. They also dissolve pretty quickly as well.
When should I book my newborn session?
When you need to reserve your newborn photographer depends on the season. It’s recommended to reserve a photographer between 2-4 months prior to your babies arrival. Be sure your photographer has flexibility in their schedule to accommodate for you going into labor naturally if you don’t plan to be induced. I personally reserve my client for a 1-2 week timeframe on my calendar and keep more availability during that time to accommodate my client’s needs.
How old should my newborn be for the session?
For optimal timing, photos should be done within the first two weeks after birth. This timeframe is recommended due to the temperament of newborns after this point as they adapt into their new world. If your baby is after this timeframe it’s best to schedule as soon as you can get in. Newborns change so much within a small amount of time.
What if the weather doesn’t cooperate?
Be sure you find a photographer who can accommodate for bad weather. Nobody wants a child to have a bad experience. Your newborn family photos are something you’ve been looking forward to for far to long for them to risk not turning out okay.
What should my family wear for our outdoor newborn family photos?
First off, absolutely dress for the season. Check to see if your photographer has a client closet and styling help.
Outdoor newborn family sessions are a great way to incorporate the entire family into your newborn photos. It’s a great way to update your family photos while celebrating your newest addition to your family. While indoor studio newborn sessions tend to be stressful and more posed, you’ll love that an outdoor session fosters a fun and stress-free environment for your family to feel more at ease during your session.
